10th International Shibori Symposium :: Call for Entries

The 2016 International Shibori Symposium will be co-chaired by Alejandro de Avila Blomberg – Director, Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca and President of World Shibori Network (WSN), Yoshiko I. Wada. The theme of the symposium is Shibori, Ikat, and Sustainability: Land, Culture, and People / Jaspe, shibori y sostenibilidad: un acercamiento a la tierra, la cultura y la gente a partir de los teñidos de reserva.”



The Call for Entry is open in the following categories –

Contemporary Art of Shibori and Ikat ( ends 15 March 2016 ) – Submit Now

A collection of exemplary contemporary artworks which demonstrate compression resist techniques, such as shibori and ikat . The aim of this exhibition is to display contemporary works of shibori and ikat by international artists, who both play and rethink tradition and medium. 

Wearable Art of Shibori ( ends 15 March 2016 ) – Submit Now

A collection of exemplary wearable artworks which demonstrate innovation and interpretation of compression resist techniques. For example, shibori and ikat used to redefine ideas of body adornment, fashion and costume. The aim of this exhibition is to display wearable works by international and Mexican artists, who challenge traditional mediums, designs and applications.

Paper Presentation (ends on 25 February 2016) – Submit Now

The paper must cover one of the following themes:

  • Compression Resist – Ikat / jaspe y rebozo & Shibori / amaras
  • Cotton, Silk & Wool
  • Natural Dye and Plants
  • Indigenous Textile Traditions
  • Contemporary Art, Design and Fashion
  • Technology and Industry

Workshops (ends on 25 February 2016) – Submit Now

The dates of workshop are November 12th, 13th and 14th, and will be held at the Centro de las Artes San Augustin (CASA), located 30 minutes outside of Oaxaca City. Hours: 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM. The workshops must cover one of the themes listed above.

Short Seminars (ends on 15 March 2016) – Submit Now

These short seminars will be held at the Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca (IAGO), in various small reading rooms on November 17th and 18th, 2016. Each seminar will be 105 minutes in length. The short seminar must cover one of the themes listed above.
